4. Robust: Can the content be interpreted reliably by assistive technologies?

The course code must be clean enough to work with current and future assistive technologies (like screen readers JAWS, NVDA, or VoiceOver).

  • Semantic HTML: The underlying code must use correct tags (e.g., using a <button> tag for a button, not a styled <div>).
  • Authoring Tool Output: If you are using tools like Articulate Storyline or Rise 360, ensure you are utilizing their built-in accessibility features (like the accessibility focus order tool) and exporting the package with accessibility options enabled.
  • LMS Compatibility: Ensure the Learning Management System hosting the course is also accessible. An accessible SCORM package is useless if the learner cannot navigate the LMS login screen to reach it.

Testing for Accessibility

You cannot achieve accessibility by guessing. A robust QA process requires two approaches:

  1. Automated Testing: Using tools (like axe DevTools or WAVE) to scan the LMS interface or web-based course for code-level contrast and aria-tag errors.
  2. Manual Testing: A human must physically disconnect their mouse and attempt to navigate the entire course using only a keyboard and a screen reader.
